How We Painted Our Mid-Century Modern Fireplace White (And What Went Wrong)

If you're debating whether to paint a mid-century modern fireplace white, especially if you're staring at a giant brown brick wall like we were—this post is for you. Our 1962 MCM home in Toledo had great bones, but the dark brick fireplace was eating all the light in our living room. We knew painting it would transform the space.

Step 1: Say Goodbye to the Old Hearth

The hearth had a faux finish and was badly damaged, so replacing it was a no-brainer. We visited a local stone supplier and selected a smooth, grey limestone with clean edges—simple and classic, which oddly confused the salesperson. While the stone was being cut, we prepped the brick for painting.

Step 2: Cleaning the Brick (Don’t Skip This!)

Before touching any primer, we deep-cleaned the old brick. First pass: a stiff wire brush. Second: hot water with vinegar. The grime that came off was unreal. This fireplace hadn’t seen love in decades.

Step 3: Prime It Right

We chose a masonry-grade primer (Kilz, of course). Two coats gave us a clean, even base for the paint. If you're painting MCM brick, don’t skimp here—this step makes or breaks your finish.

Step 4: Paint Time

We used Behr's Crystal White Masonry, Stucco & Brick paint—flat finish. It wasn't the cheapest, but it went on smooth and even. Three coats later, our modern fireplace makeover was looking fresh and bright. It made our vintage brass wall art pop instantly.

When the Hearth Dreams Cracked (Literally)

The limestone hearth arrived… dirty, wet, and full of odd stains. It had been left outside in the mud, soaking everything in. We let it dry for days, only to discover that one piece had been cut too short. A few hundred dollars and weeks later, we got a replacement—clean, correct, and stored indoors. The difference? Night and day. But the three original pieces still show marks and discoloration to this day.

Final Result: Not Perfect, But Worth It

Even with the hiccups, painting our mid-century fireplace white transformed the room. It reflects light, brightens the space, and draws the eye in. Sure, the hearth saga was frustrating (and expensive), but the visual impact of the new look? Worth it.
